Dry Eye Assessment

Understanding dry eye syndrome

Are you suffering from consistently gritty, irritated, itchy or excessively watery eyes? This could be Dry Eye Syndrome. While this condition can affect any age group, it most commonly develops in those over the age of 60. It’s caused by a variety of factors including pollution, windy or dry climates, inflammatory diseases and even side effects from medications. Essentially, these factors lead to the evaporation or poor drainage of tears which can cause the uncomfortable sensation of dry eyes.

What is a Dry Eye assessment?

A Dry Eye assessment is an in-depth analysis of the cause and effect of your symptoms. By investigating this, your optometrist will be able to provide a tailored treatment plan designed to manage your dry eye symptoms in the long-term.

During your assessment, our optometrist will take the time to go through all of your concerns with you, and then perform a detailed evaluation of your eyes. Using a microscope, your optometrist will view the surface of your eyes and tear film at increased magnification. They may also place a small amount of coloured liquid into the tears to highlight any dry areas on the surface of your eyes and assess tear flow.

This painless procedure, usually takes no longer than 15 minutes and will not temporarily affect or change your vision in any way.

Best of all, your Dry Eye assessment can be incorporated into your regular eye exam, as we provide a slit lamp examination as a standard part of this for assessing the front surface of your eyes.

Treating Dry Eye Syndrome

Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for Dry Eye Syndrome. However, our experienced optometrists will be able to help you find significant long-term relief by proposing a variety of treatments tailored to your lifestyle and your Dry Eye symptoms. These include products from well-known brands such as Hylo and ThealOz.
